‘Experience History at Ferrymead Heritage Park’

Step Back in Time at
Ferrymead Heritage Park

Ferrymead’s rich history is deeply tied to its location between Christchurch and the port of Lyttelton. Early pioneers transported goods over the steep Bridle Path, from Lyttelton to Heathcote, before using punts to cross the river into Christchurch. Later, maritime traffic brought goods up the estuary.

In 1863, New Zealand’s first railway was established, running from Ferrymead into central Christchurch. This historic railway inspired the creation of Ferrymead Heritage Park, and today, a restored railway follows part of the original route.

What People Are Saying

“Great place with lots to do and see. Parking was relatively easy since we arrived early entrance by the "old post office". Lots of old shops and houses to visit set out in an easily navigable layout. There is also a heritage tram and a heritage steam railway ride. The rain didn't dampen our spirits and we could have stayed longer. This was definitely worth a visit.”
