Women in New Zealand were the first in the world to vote in Parliamentary elections.  Find out what life was like for them in the late 1800s. Understand and appreciate the struggle that many went through to obtain voting rights for all New Zealand women.  (Maximum 60 students.)

Ride an old bicycle in appropriate clothing.  Experience the emancipation of the suffragists.

Home Life

Experience the reality of working-class home life and consider the attitude of these women.

Meet Sir John Hall at the Print Shop and print a poster to support the petition for women’s suffrage.

Consider how the social circles, etiquette and leisure activities shaped the attitudes of people in the late 1800s.
