The Ferrymead Heritage Park History

Ferrymead Heritage Park was formed in the 1960's by a group of local heritage enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the past for future generations to enjoy.
Their legacy and ongoing work by volunteers and staff, with support of the community, has made Ferrymead a valuable place to experience and enjoy the past.

Ferrymead Heritage Park is located in an area of rich historical significance. The area was used by European settlers who, after arriving in Lyttelton and walking over the bridle path, travelled over the Heathcote river on a "ferry by the meadow" and walked down Ferry Road to their new life in Christchurch.

Ferrymead was also the site of New Zealand's first public railway commissioned in 1863. Goods from Lyttelton would be brought around on small boats and loaded onto the train, which also carried passengers.

Today Ferrymead is owned by The Ferrymead Trust, and Ferrymead Park Ltd runs the Park onthe Trusts behalf.
There are currently 19 member societies within the park that make up The Ferrymead Trust, with a trust board that acts on behalf of approximately 400 society members.

Ferrymead Heritage Park is a not for profit charitable organisation. It was built by the hard work of thousands of volunteers over the last 50 years. It relies on grants, donations and bequests from organisations and individuals to maintain, run and make improvements to the Park.
